Abstract

Today's consumer electronic appliances integrate more and more of information and communication technologies. The technology driven design, actually dominating way in the IT domain, should be oriented to the user-centered design.Three main trends can be cited: the convergence of function and functionalities and diversification of input/output devices. In this context, User Interface (UI) designers need to participate in the early phase of design process and that, as a project leader. In the conceptualization phase, it is needed to joggle constantly between generating creative solutions and evaluating their ergonomic qualities. The UI designer needs to have new modes of Intermediate Representation (IR) and to reposition classical ergonomic tools in appropriate manner to the new context. Our assumption is that the IR generated during the Conjoint Trends Analyses can be helpful for fluid communication of multidisciplinary design team and that economic test techniques such as Wizard of Oz can be useful in the conceptualization phase. We experimented the above assumptions during the RNRT interactive TV (iTV) project. The result of our research is a model of design of consumer information appliances allowing the UI designer to generate new concepts adapted to user needs. We contributed to a better understanding of the way of UI designer's participation in the multidisciplinary design team.
