Abstract

In the transportation engineering context, this work is dedicated to the study of the long term cyclic behaviour of infrastructures (railway track, road pavements, ...) which are subject to traffic loading, leading to notable degradations (railway track defects, rutting). As a result, exploitation problems, as well as a lack of comfort and security occur. Maintenance procedures being expensive, a predictive tool able to simulate such degradations and thus optimise the frequency of maintenance, is therefore needed. In this work, an approach based on structural analysis is proposed, aimed at determining the global response of a platform under repeated loading (several millions of cycles), and more particularly its residual settlement profile. The description of this phenomenon (a double-scale time evolution) is directly related to the progressive accumulation of permanent deformations which lead to the occurence of the residual settlement. The determination of those permanent deformations involves the formulation of constitutive cyclic law for the materials (ballast, unbound granular materials, ...) which is incorporated into a general calculation procedure. Based on the devloped approach, we set up a numerical computational tool using a finite element code, allowing the determination of the residual settlement of the transportation infrastructure due to the application of several millions of cycles. We calibrate this procedure by means of simulations of some experiments carried out on areduced scale bench test, reproducing a portion of ballast track. Finally, we try to take into account to elastic non-linearity of the materials making up the infrastructure, and point up the importance of such a non-linearity aspect in the prediction of the residual settlement.
