Gacogne, Valérie (2003) Impact of freight transport costs on logistical systems with system dynamics modelling. PhD thesis Transport, ENPC.
Abstract
Freight pricing appears as an important issue for Common transport policy. Firm logistical organisation is influenced by trade-offs in which transport costs make part, and the way firms organise this system directly affects freight flows. This PhD thesis aims to analyse the complex link existing between logistical organisations and freight flows, and to assess the possible impacts of an increase in freight rates on the logistical system and consequently on freight flows. A systemic approach is needed to analyse the role of freight transport costs in the whole logistical organisation. Therefore a system dynamics approach was done for a better understanding of the actual role of transport costs in the logistical system, and to analyse their impact on freight flows. Flows are analysed in tonnes-lifted, tonnes-kilometres, and are also considered in terms of average distances, number of transport links in the networks, shipment size and frequency, and possible flow consolidation.
