Abstract

The milk marketing could play a central role in the changes within the production units: 1) on

the dairy production techniques and 2) on the management of the milk incomes. Research

relays on scientific and development challenges. The present thesis global objective is to

assess the impact of milk marketing on breeders’ practices and strategies and to appreciate its

role in the socio-techniques changes in dairy farming systems of Sikasso periurban area

(Mali). The scientific objective is to contribute in general to researches in zootechny-system

and in livestock development on periurban system in particular. In order to achieve that,

numerous knowledge were used and specific methods were mobilized in order to analyze in

long time changes and assess the performances of the production units in short term period.

The methodology was based on three methods groups : (i) investigations for a systemic

diagnosis of the dairy production, (ii) retrospective investigations for the analysis of the long

time changes including territorial scale, (iii) technico-economic one year follow-ups. Five

strategies of the dairy production have been distinguished: 1) weak withdrawal of milk, 2)

Interest on milk with grazing management, 3) Interest on milk with purchase of food

complements, 4) high milk production with crossed cows and distribution of concentrates and

5) high dairy production with permanent housing of crossbred cows. A technico-economic

working model has also been built. The breeders changed their practices and developed some

strategies to produce and market more milk in order to take advantage of the opportunity

offered by the market the urban consumers.
