Abstract

Thomson Scattering - the scattering of a low intensity electromagnetic wave by electrons – is a radiative process producing light at the frequency on the incident wave. However, as the intensity approaches 1018 W/cm2, the motion of the electrons oscillating in the wave becomes strongly nonlinear and relativistic. In that case, the scattered light contains harmonics and the spatial distribution is anisotropic. Today thanks to the advent of high intensity lasers, this process can be studied in the x-ray range. In this thesis we present the first experimental study of nonlinear Thomson Scattering in the x-ray range.
