Abstract
This study deals with the transient behavior of deep salt caverns. In the literature, several authors studied the steady!
-state behavior of salt caverns under a constant or cyclic int!
ernal pr
essure. The transient mechanical behavior of salt samples also has been studied by many authors. However, less attention has been paid to the transient behavior of salt caverns. In this study, a modified constitutive law which takes into account the reverse creep of rock salt is developed. Numerical computations using the new model are performed to highlight the significance of this transient behavior for the interpretation of Mechanical Integrity Tests. Another aspect of the transient behavior of salt caverns is related to the modification of stress distribution in rock mass. The stress distribution changes very slowly in the rock mass after a salt cavern was leached out. This phenomenon is called geometrical transient behavior and it is responsible for long duration of the transient phase in a salt cavern. Numerical computations proved that this phenomenon makes easier hydraulic fracturing in a salt cavern kept under a low pressure for a long period of time. Long-term beha!
vior of brine-filled salt caverns coupling thermal, hydraulic and mechanical phenomena is discussed to assess long-term predictions of the evolution of abandoned caverns.
