Abstract

Simulation of seated reaching movements is useful for designing the interior of a car. It allows assessing reachability of control commands and their discomfort in an early phase of design, through virtual simulation. However, this kind of simulation encounters theoretical and pratical problems. Practically, the whole simulation process should be designed for all kind of reach tasks, arising the problems of robustness and genericity. Theoretically, it is important to understand how the movements are controlled. A better understanding of motion control may avoid rebuilding a movement database at each minor task definition changes. Two experiments have been carried out. The first one aimed to construct a complete database of in-vehicle reach motions including 13 different reach tasks of for a driver. The second one has explored the kinematic characteristics of seated reaching motions. It allowed identifying the prameters, which has an influence on trajectory formation, arm/trunk coordination.
