Abstract

The Hall effect thruster is a plasma engine used for satellite station-keeping, small orbital corrections and small interplanetary missions. Its principle is based on an electric and magnetic cross-field configuration to accelerate ions to high velocities. A major issue in its modelisation is the anomalous transport of electrons through the magnetic field as the classic diffusion by elec!
tron-atom collisions is insufficient. This PhD dissertation is!
a theor etical and numerical study showing the existence of electron drift instabilities in the frequency range 10-40 MHz with wavelengths close to the electron Larmor radius (millimeter). These instabilities based on the resonance between the electron cyclotron giration and the drift motion develops in packets of unstable modes in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. They are shown to be responsible for a stochastic diffusion of electrons across the magnetic field which corresponds to the anomalous transport properties.
