Abstract

This thesis aims at studying the modeling and the numerical resolution of macrosegregation during ingot solidification of binary metallic alloys. Macrosegregation is an heterogeneity of solute concentration at the ingot scale. This solute segregation modifies drastically the mechanical and chemical properties. So it is essential to predict such heterogeneities to ensure the product quality.
After describing the industrial context and a review of the current research in this field, the models implemented in THERCAST (the solidification software developed at CEMEF) are presented. The set of macroscopic equations is preceded by a discussion on the validation of macrosegregation software. Then, the theory of remeshing and our adaptive anisotropic remeshing strategy are explained. These developments are applied to the simulation of different ingots. The first one, a small ingot, is used to validate our code by comparison with experimental results and numerical results from others codes. Then a deeper analysis of THERCAST simulations is made on a large 2D ingot, a 3D ingot similar to an industrial case and an intermediate ingot for more complex numerical studies. The models limitations and the phenomena identified during this study are finally discussed and will permit to define interesting orientations to continue this work on macrosegregation.
