Abstract

The study contains a large pan devoted to die new experimental developments. The tensiometer developed in the laboratory underwent an essential improvement. The direct measurement of the suction in the laboratory and in the field showed its reliability and confirmed the possibilityof direct measurement for long time. The direct measurement of the suction allowed die determination of the retention curve of the silt. The method of the instantaneous profiles allowed us in determine the permeability at nonsaturated state by performing infiltration tests. The comparisons made between the values calculated by means of a model and those measured for the main considered parameters (suction, volumetric water content) demonstrated the aptitude of the model to reproduce the state of the soil satisfactorily. We also studied die retention properties and volume change behaviour of the Romainville clay for suctions between 1 and 216 MPa.
