Ghidossi, Patrick (2003) Contribution to the study of the effect of polymer matrix composite specimen machining on their mechanical performances. PhD thesis Procédés de fabrication, ENSAM 2003ENAM0019.
Abstract
To determine the composite mechanical properties, small coupons are often used that require preparation including edge cutting/machining. This cutting operation generate heat and strains, and cut surfaces are often affected by damages. It is of primary importance to understand how the mechanical performances are affected by the cutting operations. This study aims at the influence of the machining procedure (routing, end milling) of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite coupons on their mechanical performances. Three mechanical tests are considered: Iosipescu shear test, ring tension test and off-axis tensile test. The cutting damages are detailed and evaluated by surface roughness measurements and microscopic observations with statistical treatments of the results. Two significant damage criteria are determined to explain low mechanical performances of composites coupons. Cutting recommandations advise in the choice of machining procedure on fiber reinforced composite coupons.
